Gilded Age Steinway Grand Piano Model B Art Case (1882) Original Condition

  

This important work of decorative art was designed by George A. Schastey, and is considered by historians to be the single finest example of his workmanship in existence. This Steinway was the centerpiece of two exhibits of decorative art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art NYC in 2016. It received international attention in major antique and arts publications as well as the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. This remarkably well-preserved instrument retains its original finish, strings felts etc.

The cabinet has undergone conservation by the same art center responsible for the Alma-Tadema Steinway. Several concerts were performed on this Steinway by world-class pianists while in the museum. All were impressed by the warm, rich tone and responsive action. This undisturbed instrument is capable of producing true period sound. This is one of two designer art case Steinways of this quality to have survived from this period.
