The American company Mason and Hamlin started building pianos in 1881. They worked strenuously to improve the stability and sound of their pianos, reaching a peak just before World War One, and were the main competition for Steinway pianos.

Many musicians preferred the sound from that golden age of piano tone that artists were capable of producing on Mason and Hamlins. Taken over by the Aeolian-American Piano Company in the 1930's, the pianos the company subsequently produced cannot compare with the tone of vintage Mason and Hamlin pianos from their peak of perfection of two decades earlier. Especially prized is the model A, which is 5 feet 8 inches long.

This model A has a rosewood case and bears the serial number 23546, marking that it was manufactured in 1914. It was completely rebuilt in 1985 by A C Pianocraft, and kept in a temperature and humidity controlled environment. It has a particularly warm, rich and full tone. Octaves, three unisions, overstrung scale, with Mason and Hamlin's improved repeating action, a Capo'Astro bar and duplex system, and sostenuto pedal. Located in New York, New York.
